January brought my family an unexpected piece of fabulous luck!
While internet spelunking, I stumbled upon a forum thread asking users to post things that they wished they knew earlier. I’m not sure if it’s good or bad, but the only information I remember came from a user who simply said:
“How to use a can opener”
“Obviously, I know how to use a can opener,” I said to myself (probably defensively). Who doesn’t know that, right? You just put the thing on the thing and crank it.
So I Googled it and found that the poster was right and I was wrong!

So that’s it. The blade should be oriented horizontally instead of vertically.
However, I went and told some online friends about this and was mocked for using the wrong can opener (apparently there are devices that easily and safely separate the lid from the can) but either way I still appreciate knowing that opening cans does not need to be difficult or dangerous.
